Wheel of Decans
The 36 decans of the zodiac: click a segment to explore
Each solar sign covers 30° of the ecliptic and is divided into 3 decans of 10°, making 36 segments for the entire zodiac. Knowing your decan considerably refines the reading of a chart: two people born under the same sign can have noticeably different temperaments depending on their decan. That is often where the missing nuance is found.
Triplicities
Each decan is ruled by a planet of the same element. The 1st decan of a Fire sign remains under the influence of its own ruler, the 2nd takes on the colouring of the 2nd Fire sign, and the 3rd of the third. This system emphasises elemental consistency and the natural affinities between signs.
Chaldean
Rooted in ancient astrology, this system is based on the Chaldean order of the 7 classical planets (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon), repeated continuously from Aries. Older and more widely used in traditional and Hellenistic astrology, it produces often surprising correspondences — such as a Leo decan ruled by Saturn.
